My Favourite Things

“…when the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad

I simply remember my favourite things, and then I don’t feel so bad…”

The chorus (written by Rodgers & Hammerstein for The Sound of Music in 1959) to this enduring song is so catchy.

There’s something about our favourite things that has the magical ability to lift us up when we’re down.

They encourage us when we doubt. They remind us of what is truly important.

Whether it’s a musical, a chocolate brownie still warm from the oven, a bunch of fresh flowers, the first mango of summer, a piece of jewellery handed down from your beloved grandmother, a card received in the mail… our favourite things can simply make us feel better.

But there’s more to it, too. Because even our favourite things can become obligations, dust catchers, things that add to a pile of guilt we carry around with us. One of my favourite things is gathering friends together over simple food to connect, laugh, share. And yet, life gets busy. We say we must, but weeks, months, years go by, and we haven’t. The guilt, the embarrassment can stop me from changing that. It can hold my hand back from picking up the phone and saying come on over! This month feels like the right time – with Easter and extended long weekends, to put aside those feelings and indulge once again in one of my favourite things. I’m making the calls today and locking in dates!

What about you? Is there something you love to do? Something that raises your spirits and puts a spring in your step, but you’ve been holding back… Will you join me in changing that during April?

Walking hand in hand with the one you love along the beach, indulging in a new knitting project or some new charcoals and a small sketchbook, planting herbs in pots along your kitchen windowsill, or taking photos of the sunrise, I invite you to do something that lights you up!

Because when you’re lit up, miracles can – and do – happen.

Throughout April, we’re going to be talking about our favourite things (or favorite… depending on where you live;). Will you join us?

I’d love you to share YOUR favourite things with us. A photo, a poem, a song… I’ll accept contributions up to 12th April – it would be an honour to publish your contribution to our month here.
