Finding the Courage to Let Go

“If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it is yours. If it doesn’t, it never was”.

Whenever I hear the word courage mentioned, without fail I instantly remember the cowardly lion from The Wizard of Oz, who wished to travel to the Land of Oz to meet the wizard, as he believed the wizard possessed the magical powers to bestow upon the lion his yearned for courage.

Today, however, I would like to share with you the story of another lion, a beautiful lion named “Christian”. You may have heard the story of Christian before, maybe not, either way, please take about two and a half minutes to watch this video, which will give you a brief overview of Christian’s story.

Oh, and have some tissues on standby. If you’re anything like me, and totally dotty about animals, you’ll need them.

What did you think about that? I cannot watch that clip ever, without coming over all teary eyed!

When Ace Bourke and John Rendall decided to make a lion cub their pet, in 1969, to live with them in their London apartment, it may have been regarded by some as a moment of pure lunacy! They believed it to be an act of love.

During the following months, however, whilst each day caring for their beloved pet, watching him develop and mature into a fully grown lion, their love for Christian increasing along with his size, Ace and John came to the realisation that they had to let Christian go.

Imagine if you can the courage it must have taken Ace and John to release Christian into the wilds of Africa, with the knowledge that they may never see their beloved pet again. It took love, selflessness and a massive dose of courage to give Christian the gift of freedom, which he so rightfully deserved.

And the pure joy of hearts overflowing with love when Christian later recognised them, showering Ace and John with innocent, carefree, unquestioning affection, the unique love shared between humans and their pets.

For me, the story of Christian is the perfect marriage between courage and freedom…

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the heart warming story of Christian the lion. Does the video melt your heart, just as it does mine?

That is a lovely story, isn’t it? i watched a TV program about them and cried. It was beautiful. What an amazing experience to have had. Thank you for reminding me of it.

  2. I know the program you mean, Anne. I saw most of it and my daughter taped it for me. Isn’t it great to hear Ace and John’s recollections of their days with Christian? I couldn’t miss an opportunity to share the story here. :)
