You Are Already a Masterpiece

It seems to me that we're always striving to better ourselves. We want to be a new, improved version of ourselves. Especially as we stand on the cusp of a new year, we list all the ways we want to become better, slimmer, fitter, stronger, wiser, kinder, happier, richer......Drop the idea of becoming someone, because you are already a masterpiece. You cannot be improved. You have only to come to it, to know it, to realise it.

We dream of becoming someone
We think we'll be much happier and more content when we've bettered ourselves. When we've improved. We become hooked on self-improvement, we follow diets and alien fitness regimes, we read books and do courses and beat ourselves over the head that we're not there yet. And what's been on my mind lately is this: By always striving to improve, we never truly appreciate ourselves. We never recognise in ourselves the masterpiece, the sheer grace of being who we are. We don't even think of ourselves very kindly any more. In our own eyes we're a failure. And we mirror that back out at the world. And we continually find disappointment. It's only by acceptance and appreciation of what is, right now, that we can create improvement. We can become greater versions of our true selves only when we recognise that woman in the mirror. It's only by stopping and noticing, right here and right now, who you are (warts and all), and appreciating that, that magic can happen. It's time to stop the striving, the reaching, the one-days and the somedays... and recognise that here and now, you are enough. Whatever it is you've decided to become in 2012, set that gently aside for today. Today is for knowing. You are magnificent.
Breathe deeply on this today. Then let me know how it feels for you. xxxImage credit: Angelo Gonzalez
