If you want to feel purposeful in your life, have reverence for all of life. Find joy and peace.

~ Dr. Wayne Dyer.

Do you recall having a moment in your life, triggered by the slightest and most unexpected of occurrences, resulting in a monumental epiphany?

My best friend and I had finished our meal, my one year old son was snuggled up in his bed for the night. All of the doors and windows were closed against the chilling Sydney winter winds and the glow of the fire shone through the glass doors of the slow-combustion fireplace.

My husband was away with work, and my friend and I were relishing the opportunity of having some uninterrupted girl time together.

Sitting on the carpet in front of the fireplace, we sang and talked and laughed the night away. Record after record spun around and around the turntable. We were young and carefree, forgetting both worries and inhibitions, as we sang our lungs out to one soppy song after another.

My friend jumped up and started to dance, feeling total resonance with the words of a song….

“Oh, I’ve been to Nice and the Isle of Greece while I’ve sipped champagne on a yacht, I’ve moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed ‘em what I’ve got”.

She had spent three months overseas during the previous year, having visited Nice, Greece and Monte Carlo. She had also spent time on a yacht, sailing around the Greek Islands!

As the song continued, the words began to hit me.

“Hey, you know what paradise is? It’s a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we’d like them to be. But you know what truth is? It’s that little baby you’re holding, it’s that man you fought with this morning….”

My epiphany….

I announced to my friend, “I know my purpose in life; why I was put on this earth. It is to be a wife and mother”. She agreed.

Between the two of us, my friend and I now have seven children, and as my friend has proudly commented on many occasions, when the two of us are together, we are both parents to seven children, being testament to the closeness of our two families.

How do you discover your true purpose in life? I believe the answer to this question is summed up by my all-time favourite quotation, by Dr. Seuss:

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter, don’t mind”.

Discovering your purpose begins with being authentic, with yourself. Strip away the clothes, makeup, home, car and career. Forget about the prestige of every material possession in existence. Forget about Monte Carlo (unless that’s where you live!) Feel appreciation and love for every small detail of the life you are living. Shower yourself with absolute honesty. Go back to the core of your being….you will find yourself there. Breathe deeply, close your eyes and calm your mind. You will realise your true purpose for being here. The answer is there, deep inside.

And followed by the realisation you will be enveloped by an immense feeling of peace and relief….I promise!

I thank every Law of the Universe for that carefree night in Sydney, the night that my friend and I both realised the true purpose of our lives.

And my one year old baby boy? As I write this, it is just two days away from his twenty-fifth birthday. I cherish my boy with every ounce of my being, as I do his two sisters, his brother and their father. They are the truth of my life.

Have you discovered the purpose of your life yet? The answers to every question you have are inside of you….all you need do is look within, with love and an open heart.

Beautiful article Joanne! I can picture you & your friend vividly in my mind and the bliss of that moment together. Simply glorious.

  2. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed my article, Dee. Yes, it was a memorable night and the friend I mentioned is still my best friend…we have been through a lifetime of events together!

Oh, and the photo at the top of the page is my baby boy I talked about. :)

  3. Dee says:

Friends like that are precious, and I’m sure you appreciate each other immensely!

I wondered about the photo of your boy – I’m sure he’s grown into a handsome young man. Happy (belated) Birthday to your ‘baby’ :)

  4. Hevver says:

It is as if I wrote that! You have spoken my very heart. The song…just the other day, a friend on fb posted that video and I heard it for the first time in over 20 years. This is so strange!! The friend that posted the song just happens to live in Australia!

  5. Joanne says:

That really is a coincidence! I heard the song only recently also, which reminded me of that night, in time to write this post for Káren. :)
