Happy woman on a kayakMany people think of Feng Shui as some aspect of interior design or moving furniture, and although those certainly can be aspects of Feng Shui, it is so much more than that. In essence your environment (home and work space) is connected to you and every aspect of your life is reflected in your home.

Through the eyes of Feng Shui you are encouraged to look at your home in terms of how it reflects energetically what is happening in your life. Each aspect of life is represented there and in this respect, your home has a lot to tell you.

The area that relates to career also relates to your journey through life. It’s not just about the work that you do, but how you feel about what you are doing. Whether your work is fulfilling and you are doing the type of work that you really want to be doing.

This area focuses on your life path, the flow of your life – your specific journey through this life. Although you can work with this area to improve job prospects or aspects of your career, it is more about where you’re headed in life, whether you feel you’re on the right path.

That’s pretty deep stuff, so it’s no accident then that the element that is associated with this area is water.  Where do you feel you are on the river of your life? Do you feel safe? Are you flowing with or against the current? Are you gliding by or crashing into the rocks or obstacles in the water?

If you want to find the career area, it is located in the front, middle part of your house. Imagine you’re standing outside looking at the front of your house. Divide the front into 3 equal areas – the career area is the one in the middle. Very often this will be where your front door is located, or perhaps it’s a room. Take a look at this area and see if you can identify the connection between what is there now, what it looks like and what it feels like, and what is going on with this aspect of your life situation.

If you feel that you are not where you want to be in your career or on your life path, then it’s worth taking a very close look at this area. First, identify what is there now. How does it feel? Do you use this area? For example, let’s say that your front door is in this area. In the U.S. many people do not use their front doors – we drive into the garage and enter the house from there. If this is the case then your front door (your career) is not being activated or energized, which may translate to you feeling stuck or dissatisfied with what you are doing now.

In this case, a simple remedy to get energy moving would be to start using your front door from time to time to keep it activated. You’ll want to make sure that your door is in good working order, that it is not difficult to open. You’ll also want to make sure that your front entrance is welcoming and inviting – so that you are welcoming new opportunities to come to you.

Even if this area is in a room or on the porch, you’ll want to make sure that it is in good repair, not cluttered – basically that the energy there now is good. When you are sure of that, you can focus on what to do to enhance the area – so that you’ll bring energy to your life journey (the right kind of energy, of course).

Since the element that is associated with this area is water, then water would make a great enhancement. You can place a small water feature here (inside or outside)  or, if it’s a room, you could hang a beautiful picture that has water in it. Reflective surfaces also represent water, so you could hang a mirror in this room.

Dead Sea IsraelThose are some general enhancements. If you’d like to get more specific, think about your life purpose – what is your journey here all about? What are you here to do? Find something that represents that for you. It could be a piece of artwork or it could be a book or anything really. The key is that it doesn’t have to mean anything to anyone else – just to you.

Let your home help you on your life’s journey. Let it help you embrace who you are and what you’re here to do. Let it help you attract the opportunities and resources that enable you to discover and live your life purpose.  Most of all, start to see your home in a different way – see how it is connected to you and how it reflects back to you how you feel on the inside and what is happening in your life right now.

Great article Linda, I can really relate to what you’ve said and you’ve opened my eyes to some areas of my home and life that certainly need an overhaul. I look forward to further articles. Thanks

    Welcome to the Spaces, Linda!

I’ve been a feng shui fan since reading Karen Kingston years ago, and this post reminded me why some of my home functions well and some of it doesn’t. The whole family’s had an energy surge since I cleared a better path for chi by getting rid of furniture that folk kept bumping into. I declutter regularly, but I had a radical purge last autumn, feeling like my health and wellbeing depended on it. When I talk about doing things to have cleaner, fresher energy, I still get a lot of teasing or ridicule from extended family members or friends who think talking about energy flow is a lot of twaddle, but I ignore them and continue to do as you suggest; I’ve filled my home with symbols that inspire me on my journey and subtly remind the family of our values, dreams and achievements.

    I enjoyed this; thank you!

  3. Linda – a huge, warm welcome to The Calm Space! Thank you for this wonderful, inspiring article. It’s come at a perfect time for me. I’ve started the clear out of my study/office this week and can already feel the energy is changing.

Like Gaye, I too look forward to further articles from you. Thank you.

Hi Linda! Wonderful to see you here, and thank you for the timely reminder about my office! Like Káren I’ve started to clear out the space and can feel a positive change. Now, if the new plant survives in here it will be a good thing :)

Thank you for the warm welcome and your wonderful comments. It sounds as though you’re all making wonderful progress. I know you’ll love the results that occur as you start to work with your home in this way.

Janice – don’t worry about being teased by other family members. You just keep focusing on improving the energy, and they will soon be coming to you for advice. They will notice the change in you and all the positive things that happen for you and they’ll want to know how they can have that happen for them too. Instead of teasing you, they’ll start to see you as the one to turn to for advice.

I love to hear your feedback and of the progress you make – so thank you for sharing.

Yes, my career area is the front door, the front hallway. I like this idea of honoring that area, honoring my career–I often sit on my tiny front porch as I end the day part of my work day, take a break to sit and watch the sunset, and then go on to the evening part of my work.

I love the idea of adding a water feature — can’t decide if it should be just outside the door, maybe a tiny watering pan for the neighborly birds, or maybe a small framed photograph of a water scene in the front hall. Thanks so much for sparking some new ideas. I love being able to do tiny steps to make a difference.

Bo – you could always do both – a watering pan for the birds and a small photograph of a water scene. Whatever you do it’s important that you love it!
